An Advance Directive is a legal document that may appoint a healthcare agent for an individual and / or directs healthcare professionals and family about healthcare wishes, in the event the patient is no longer able to speak for him or herself. In times of crisis, family and loved ones are especially thankful to know what decisions a patient would make.
Because there can be legal consequences from healthcare decisions, these preferences need to be made known in a way that all involved can understand and follow. An Advance Directive makes patient decisions clear.
The chaplains can help patients complete an Advance Directive and give a copy to the people who will need it.
